Workin' on my Fitness ♥ My One Year Goal

Over the last couple of years I have been working at becoming healthier.  I've lost 35 pounds over that time, and I am pretty pleased with that.  Ultimately what worked for me is what works for most people, I ate fewer calories than my body burned!

I still have some more weight I would like to lose, but I am looking for a fitness goal that focuses less on the number on the scale, and more on straight-up fitness.  The majority of my weight loss has come from eating less, and not really exercising very much.  I know that if I become more active, I can eat more, and still lose weight.  By the way, I REALLY like food... like a lot.  I also really like sitting and doing nothing.  Basically, Liz Lemon is my spirit animal.

Since losing these 35 pounds, I notice that I have more endurance when I jog!  Last week I discovered that I can run one mile without stopping.  This may not be a huge accomplishment for many people, but it sure as heck is for me.  I distinctly remember in high school, they would make us run four laps around our outdoor track.  Four laps equaled one mile.  I definitely was not able to run one mile without stopping when I was in high school.  I can still remember my gym teacher yelling at me, "PITTER PATTER, LET'S GET AT 'ER!".

Now when I say that I can jog now, I am not breaking any land-speed records.  I run really, really slow.  Like, this guy could outpace me.

"Sup?"

That's fine though, because the most important thing is that I try to improve on my own accomplishments.  In the spirit of continuing my progress, I am setting a goal for myself.  I would like to be able to run 5k, and I am giving myself a year to get there.  That would be 3 miles, and I want to run it nonstop!  I think I can do it.  I am giving myself a lot of time.

Remember that it is important to set health goals for yourself that are not contingent on the number on the scale.  Increasing your cardiovascular fitness is just as important!  It is also important to surround yourself with motivational people who support you.  Here is a picture of my cat, Piper, on my treadmill being incredibly inspirational.

Thanks for reading!  I will keep you guys up to date on my progress.  Mini goal is to run 1.5 miles nonstop!

  1. You are absolutely right about setting fitness goals and not focussing on the scale. Fitness is much more than a number, it is a choice for a healthier and happier you.
Congrats on loosing weight and gaining endurance, you did very well there.

  3. Such a lovely post, and I think it's great that you can run 1 mile without stopping - I think when it comes to getting fitter it's all about completing smaller goals one by one because you stay motivated that way :)
