Accutane Essentials: Lips

Dry, flaky, and chapped lips are one of the most common issues with taking Accutane.  I read many a blog and tweet written by Accutane sufferers on the night I filled by first prescription.  Many people were reporting what I have chosen to call "Joker Lips".  These poor souls had cracks at the corners of their mouth that were painful, and hard to hide.  The thought of this terrified me!  I attribute my luck in avoiding this level of dryness to the following three essential products.

Badger Balm Unscented Classic Lip Balm ($3.99 Well.ca)

I have one of these in both of my most often used purses, one next to my couch, one in the cup holder of my treadmill, etc (you get the point!).  This balm contains olive oil, beeswax, and aloe, all of which are incredibly gentle.  Of everything I have used on my lips over the last 6 months, this has been the biggest lip-saver.  I tried using my lipsmackers every once in awhile because I missed the flavours/scents, but they just felt weird and grainy on my flaky lips.  I cannot recommend this enough!!

e.l.f Studio Lip Exfoliator ($3.00 eyeslipsface.com, Superstore)

An exfoliator is an absolute must have for your Accutane toolkit.  My lips didn't chap, but they flaked like a mofo over the course of treatment.  Towards the end it has gotten so bad that I have to exfoliate every night, and in the morning as well.  I have almost given up on lipstick entirely at this point because the colour just clings to the dry patches.  What I love about the e.l.f exfoliator is that it is a bullet, which means you don't have to stick your finger in a pot, like with LUSH exfoliators.  By rubbing this on your lips in a circular pattern, you can get rid of almost all signs of flakiness, which is a huge relief because it is not nice when you rub your lips together and they feel rough.  The exfoliator is made of sugar crystals and shea butter, and acts as a lip balm after application.  I was at Superstore today and noticed that they are carrying e.l.f. now, so that would be a good place to look!

Nuxe Reve de Miel Ultra Nourishing Lip Balm ($20 price estimate, Shoppers Drugmart)

I had been wanting to try this lip product for ages, because so many of my favourite beauty gurus have gushed over it.  I splurged the week I started Accutane, and I regret nothing.  It is pricey for a lip balm, but this little pot is a miracle worker.  This balm has honey as its main ingredient.  I slathered this on every night before I went to bed, and it conditioned my lips like a boss.  I think this helped a lot to keep my lips from cracking and bleeding, which they did not do at all through this last 6 months.  The price is scary, but damn, you got to TREAT YOSELF!

I have an appointment with my derm in one week, and I am hoping that it is time to come off of the Accutane!  I miss lipstick!
